Chinese Corner Event "Embracing Diversity, Enjoying Chinese" (2nd Session) Held at CJLU

To build a bridge for two-way language and cultural exchange between Chinese and international students, and to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for learning Chinese, the second session of the "Chinese Corner" at China Jiliang University was successfully held on the afternoon of April 22 in Room A404, Huanyu Building. Under the theme“Gen Z's Online Life,”over 20 students from countries including China, Indonesia, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Russia, and Vietnam took part in this unique language and cultural dialogue.

At the beginning of the event, students were divided into four groups. They broke the ice by introducing themselves in Chinese (name, nationality, age, major) and got creative making their own name cards. Following that, a classic game of“drumming and passing the flower”heated up the atmosphere. The“lucky”student picked randomly introduce a member of their group, helping everyone get to know each other quickly.

In the subsequent icebreaker game“Name Carrot Squat”both Chinese and international students had to accurately remember and call out each other's names. Amid laughter and cheerful voices, they not only deepened their impressions of one another but also completely shook off any initial nervousness. The atmosphere became lively and warm.

The core part of the event was a 55-minute thematic discussion centered around“Gen Z's Online Life.”First, students shared their main online activities — watching dramas, scrolling through short videos, acquiring knowledge, and more — reflecting the diverse digital landscape of today's youth. Then came the segment on internet buzzwords. Guided by the host, a vivid set of popular Chinese online expressions was introduced and discussed, including neijuan (involution), tangping (lying flat), Foxi (Buddhist-style), dazi (activity partner), zhuliren (chief director/manager),“city or not city,”and“special forces-style travel.”Chinese and international students not only explored the usage of these terms and the social mindsets behind them but also crossed linguistic borders to share interesting buzzwords from their own countries over the past five years, as well as trends in their evolution. The group engaged in lively cross-cultural debates on questions such as:“Do internet buzzwords promote communication or cause misunderstandings?”and“Are they fun or challenging for Chinese learners?”

The Chinese Corner event came to a close in a relaxed, open atmosphere. Through self-introductions, fun games, and in-depth topic discussions, Chinese and international students were able to practice their Chinese speaking skills in a real language environment and deepen their understanding of different online cultures. In the future, the Chinese Corner at China Jiliang University will continue to organize diverse and engaging activities around themes that interest young people, supporting students of all nationalities as they grow together through multicultural exchange and enjoy learning Chinese.
